'Crazy Ex-Girlfriend' star: Season 1 was prologue to the actual story

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend danced onto The CW last fall, and hasn’t slowed down since. The freshman hourlong comedy was given five extra episodes, released a soundtrack, and earned its co-creator and star Rachel Bloom a Golden Globe award in the span of its first season. So what’s planned for an encore?

According to Vincent Rodriguez III, who plays Josh Chan on the show, all of what fans saw in the first season of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend was just a “prologue.”

“There’s talk that season 1 was actually a prologue to the story,” Rodriguez said at the PEOPLE and EW Upfronts party on Monday. “At the season finale of season 1, it was like, ‘Now the story’s going to actually start.’ So that’s what’s exciting about season 2: all that stuff that happened in season 1, that was just the precursor. Now what’s going to happen? From what I’ve heard, it’s pretty exciting.”

Fans of the series will recall how its first season ended: Rebecca (Bloom) and Josh finally professed their love for one another, but the moment was immediately undercut by the revelation that Rebecca uprooted her whole life to chase Josh, leaving him with an uncomfortable look.

Rebecca spent the bulk of the first season in denial of the real reason why she moved, and coming to terms with her feelings for Josh. Now, at least according to Rodriguez, the real story is set to begin.
